This is a rustic, 20th-century "art populaire" (folk art) zinc sculpture of a rooster, a common and beloved symbol in French rural decoration.

The rooster is crafted from sheet metal, with a simple, stylized silhouette that captures the essence of the bird in a minimalist form. Its shape features a prominent comb, a pointed beak, and a curved tail, all rendered with smooth, flowing lines. The surface of the metal has a weathered, galvanized appearance, showing signs of age and patina, which adds to its vintage charm.

This piece likely served as either a decorative element for a barn or home, or perhaps as part of a weathervane or sign, given the traditional association of the rooster with French rural life. The worn edges and aged surface enhance its authenticity, making it a charming example of "art populaire."

To ensure stability when displayed, a small custom stand should be created, or it can be sat in a container.

In French culture, the rooster, or "le coq," is a powerful national symbol representing pride, resilience, and vigilance. Historically associated with the Gallic tribes of ancient France, the rooster has long been emblematic of French spirit and heritage. It is often seen on weather vanes, in art, and even in political contexts, symbolizing the nation's enduring strength and its readiness to rise and defend its values. The rooster also embodies rural traditions, as it is commonly associated with the countryside and a sense of rustic, simple life.
