Dating from the twentieth century, a lovely framed oil-on-canvas painting depicting a view of Paris's Notre Dame across a bridge from the Seine river banks beneath a cloudy blue sky by Raymond Besse (1899-1969). This piece is framed in a lovely sculpted wood frame with a rustic-painted patina. The artist's signature is seen in the lower left corner beneath the cranes and workers. Note his delightful use of colors and thick brushstrokes. This piece will easily add the charm and history of Paris to your walls.
Information on the artist:
Raymond Besse (1899-1969) was a celebrated French artist from the twentieth century. He was a painter, a draughtsman, and an illustrator known for his landscapes with figures and urban landscapes. In 1916 he settled in Paris, where he began to exhibit work in 1923, showing Fat Ox at Issoudun at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants. In 1924 his work was included in the Tokyo International Exhibition. He also showed work in Ostend. In Paris he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Tuileries from 1926 to 1931 and at the Salon d'Automne from 1926 to 1943. He provided three drawings to accompany Léon-Paul's text, The Seasons in Paris for Paris 43 published by the City of Paris, and contributed 12 compositions to Le Voyage en banlieue (Journey in the Suburbs) (St-Ouen) by Bataille-Henri. He painted landscapes in many parts of France - around Issoudun, beside the River Aisne, the Loing and so on, but concentrated mainly on picturesque parts of Paris and its surrounding area, such as quintessential Paris neighborhoods like Montmartre and views along the River Seine and the canals. His work has been exhibited and sold in several museums and galleries in Paris.
