This etching, in a tondo format, offers a scenic harbor view of Marseille with Notre-Dame de la Garde prominently perched on a hillside. The foreground showcases a lively port scene with ships, figures, and coastal activities, all intricately detailed with delicate linework. The circular composition emphasizes the grandeur of the citadel and the strategic significance of the port.

The inscription around the tondo reads, "Veüe de la Citadelle la Garde et du port de Marseille," which translates to "View of the Citadel la Garde and the port of Marseille." Notre-Dame de la Garde, affectionately called "La Bonne Mère," is a symbol of Marseille’s maritime heritage and protection. Originally a chapel from 1214, it was reconstructed in the Neo-Byzantine style in the 19th century. Perched on the city's highest hill, the basilica’s statue of the Virgin Mary watches over sailors and fishermen, solidifying its status as a beloved landmark.

This piece would make an excellent addition to a study, where it could be positioned above a wooden desk alongside vintage globes or maritime books to inspire exploration. Alternatively, it could be placed in an entryway to greet guests with a sense of history and travel.
