Dating from the nineteenth century but featuring an eighteenth-century Louis XIV style design, this pretty, antique mirror features an ornate rectangular giltwood openwork fretwork with shells and its original mercury mirror. The frame is crested with Louis XIV-style shells centered on each of the four sides. A lovely piece to add French elegance to an interior and be hung both vertically and horizontally. Note please see photos to observe areas where the frame is missing gilded elements and can see through to the wood.
This mirror contains its original mercury glass which sparkles beautifully in the light. The technique of making mercury glass mirrors was retired in the early 1900s. The mercury is fixed behind the glass in a solidified, non harmful state.
Note: Mirrors have been photographed facing fabric, a technique that reveals any age spots in the glass. In some cases, this may create the appearance of an empty frame, but each mirror is complete except where explicitly stated.
