This late 19th-century French glazed earthenware pot has a compact cylindrical body, a wide everted rim, and a single strap handle pulled and applied by hand. The interior and upper half are washed in a warm honey lead glaze accented by a soft sweep of copper green along the rim, while the lower section remains in natural buff clay, giving the piece its characteristic two-tone Provençal look. Pebbled firing marks, drip trails, and gentle undulations enrich the surface. Timeworn in a pleasing, authentic way, it shows small rim chips, scattered glaze losses, pitting, and age-related wear to the unglazed body but no structural cracks.
A classic example of southern French terre vernissée it carries the honest, workaday charm of the rural ateliers of Provence in the late 1800s.
It serves beautifully as a characterful vase for tulips or branches, a useful countertop crock for wooden utensils, or an inspired studio pot for brushes. Style it on open kitchen shelving beside cutting boards and a tian, on a farmhouse table with market flowers, or on a desk to bring a rustic note to a modern workspace.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
