1960s Large Willy Guhl Planter in Celadon Green - 21¾"

A large painted Eternit planter designed by Swiss designer Willy Guhl in the 1960s, produced in molded fibro-cement and retaining a beautifully weathered seafoam green surface. This model reinterprets the familiar form of an oversized flower pot through its gently tapering cylindrical shape and subtly accentuated rim. The painted surface has developed a richly layered patina over time, with nuanced tones of pale celadon, seafoam, and oxidised green, softened by years of outdoor exposure. Traces of moss and lichen around the rim and handles create a beautifully mottled surface, contributing to the piece's authentic outdoor character. The planter is currently not pierced for drainage, suggesting the original drainage holes were later filled or sealed.

Known for his pioneering use of industrial materials in garden design, Willy Guhl collaborated closely with the Swiss company Eternit to create durable, lightweight planters that combined functional modernism with sculptural simplicity, and which have since become highly collectible.

Its softly weathered celadon-green surface and traces of mossy patina give it a distinctly Mediterranean character, making it feel especially at home in a Provençal garden, on a shaded stone terrace, or within a sun-washed interior layered with natural materials. Beyond its use as a planter, it could also serve beautifully as a striking vessel for olive branches or dried hydrangeas, or even as a playful oversize wine cooler for summer gatherings by the pool.

May have been made with asbestos - therefore, we advise that they are displayed outside or in a well-ventilated room. The patina mustn't be modified.
