This sculpture of the Virgin and Child by Alceo Dossena (1878-1937), dating from the late 1920s, embodies a unique blend of stylistic influences typical of Dossena's later period. The elongated neck and face of the Virgin echo the Madonna style reminiscent of Modigliani, with her head gently inclined. Meanwhile, the influence of Dossena's early Renaissance period is evident in the cherubic fullness of the infant, akin to a putto.

Alceo Dossena (1878–1937) was an Italian sculptor and master forger known for creating Renaissance- and Classical-style sculptures that were so convincing they were mistaken for genuine antiquities.

Crafted from gray granitic stone, this piece emanates grace and tenderness, beautifully capturing the serene bond between mother and child. The stone’s natural texture adds depth to the sculpture’s soft expressions, with a natural patina accentuating its historical charm.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
