This elegant Louis XV period chest of drawers is a true beauty, showcasing exquisite marquetry and veneer work. Crafted in the 18th century, around 1750-1760, this chest is a testament to the impeccable craftsmanship of the era.
Made with a pine wood frame, this piece hails from the South of France. The top is a stunning Saint-Anne grey marble from Flanders with bluish highlights in perfect condition, original to the chest.
One exciting feature of this chest is the owner's stamp which can be found underneath the marble top. This stamp allowed owners to easily identify their furniture in case of theft, adding a unique and personal touch to the piece. Additionally, the chest bears the mark "C.S" on the back, likely the initials of the master cabinetmaker responsible for its creation.
Note that its marble top was intentionally designed to be larger than the piece of furniture it adorns. This design choice allows for adequate airflow between the commode and the wall, which is particularly important in humid environments like Paris during the summertime. By facilitating air circulation, this design feature helps prevent mold from forming on the walls.
The original bronze drop handle pulls and lock escutcheons are beautifully crafted, enhancing the overall elegance of the chest. The front opens with three rows of drawers, each inlaid with butterfly wings and veneered uprights, showcasing the exceptional attention to detail. The bottom apron, as well as the legs, feature a scalloped design, adding to the harmonious and chic aesthetic of the chest. Even the sides of the chest are adorned with butterfly wings, as are the lower crosspieces, ensuring that every angle of the piece is adorned with intricate and artistic elements.
This Louis XV chest of drawers is a true treasure from the 18th century. Its marquetry and veneer work, along with its subtle decorative features, exemplify the elegance and refinement of the period. Whether placed in a living room, bedroom, or entryway, this chest is sure to be a stunning focal point in any space.
