A striking eighteenth-century religious piece representing Christ on the cross, likely from a church or wealthy private chapel in France. The Louis XIV-period crucifix is mounted over a black velvet background and framed by a pretty, carved giltwood frame. The frame features its original petit oval mirror at the top ensconced by daisy petals with foxing aged and patina.
The frame's carved motifs include scrolling acanthus leaves, grapes, daisies, and lattice work at the top. This would be a moving piece for a religious space to add a touch of French artisan craft to your interiors. Note frame shows some losses to gilt as seen in photos. All original except the black velvet likely replaced over time.
