A stunning antique repoussé solid gilded bronze "Bénitier" or stoup for holy water likely once at the entrance of a Roman Catholic church in France in the eighteenth century. Perched on the shell-shaped basin are two cherub angels holding up the heart-shaped back plate which leads to a flame and cross at the apex of the piece symbolizing the "sacré cœur" or sacred heart of Jesus in Christianity.
A religious scene takes place in the center of the plate. Repoussé work is an artisan technique that is carried out by hammering the reverse side of the piece sometimes using a chisel to obtain a high-relief decoration. This beautiful piece would make a reverent statement adding a touch of religious history and French artisan craft to any space in your home.
