"Tables à abattant," or drop-leaf tables, have a practical and elegant design history. Originating in 17th-century France, these tables feature hinged leaves that can be raised or lowered, supported by swing-out legs, similar to English gateleg tables. They were designed to save space in smaller homes and were made from woods like walnut or cherry. They were often used as dining tables, writing desks, or occasional tables.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
