Dating from the eighteenth century, a stunning and weighty gilt bronze "Bénitier" or stoup for holy water likely once at the entrance of a Roman Catholic church in France. The repoussé backplate features a cross with the religious symbol of a snake at its base. Cherubs decorate the top of the cross, and a flourishing fleur-de-lis crowns the top of the piece.
The basin is in the form of a shallow shell. This beautiful Bénitier would make a reverent statement adding a touch of religious history and French artisan craft to any space in your home. Note close-up photos for some places of missing gilding.
