Up until the end of the nineteenth-century Belgium was a country of immigration. Many Flemish people migrated to the north of France for work due to industrialization. In 1880, 350,000 Belgians migrated to France.

Oil on canvas. Signed V. Thevenin. Victor Thevenin was a portrait painter who studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Lyon.
